LightWork/Free Tools/Free junk & debris tool

Which dumpster size do you actually need?

Count your debris or describe the project in plain language. This picker sizes the right roll-off container, estimates the weight, and warns you before heavy material hits a tonnage overage fee.

Your next move

Small cleanouts, single rooms, heavy debris.Call your hauler to confirm the 2-ton limit, prohibited items, and that a 10-yard container will fit your driveway.

Planning estimates only. Volume, weight, pricing, and tonnage limits vary by hauler and region.

What drives dumpster sizing?

01

Volume vs. weight

Volume picks the box, but weight can override it. Heavy debris hits the tonnage cap long before the container looks full.

02

Debris density

A yard of mixed household junk weighs ~200 lbs; a yard of concrete weighs over 2,700 lbs. Density changes everything.

03

Overage fees

Going over the included tonnage typically costs $40–$100 per extra ton, so an undersized estimate gets expensive fast.

04

Access and placement

Driveway space, low branches, and HOA rules can limit which container length will physically fit your site.

Methodology

How this picker sizes your dumpster

Volume is built up from your item counts using typical cubic-yard figures published by national haulers, then matched to the smallest 10, 20, 30, or 40-yard container with a 10% buffer. Weight is estimated from debris density and compared against each container's included tonnage. Heavy debris like concrete and dirt is steered into 10-yard boxes because haulers weight-limit those loads. The AI mode converts a plain-language project description into a volume estimate. All figures are planning estimates - confirm tonnage, prohibited items, and placement rules with your local hauler.
