How much will your debris weigh?

Pick a material and a volume to estimate debris weight in pounds and tons - then see which roll-off dumpster's included tonnage it fits, so an overweight load doesn't surprise you with overage fees.

Enter your debris

Density varies enormously - concrete weighs about ten times mixed household junk.

cubic yards

Estimate the cubic yards of debris. A standard pickup-truck bed holds roughly 2–3 cubic yards.

Dumpster tonnage fit

✕10-yard - includes about 2 tons. Your load would exceed the included tonnage.
✕20-yard - includes about 3 tons. Your load would exceed the included tonnage.
✕30-yard - includes about 4 tons. Your load would exceed the included tonnage.
✕40-yard - includes about 5.5 tons. Your load would exceed the included tonnage.
This load exceeds the included tonnage of even a 40-yard container. Plan to split it across multiple loads or arrange a heavy-debris box with the hauler.

Your next move

Confirm tonnage limits and overage rates with your hauler before loading heavy material.

Planning estimate. Actual weight varies with moisture, compaction, and material mix.

Why debris weight matters

01

Tonnage limits

Every roll-off dumpster includes a set tonnage. Go over it and the hauler bills an overage, often $40–$100 per extra ton.

02

Density swings

A cubic yard of concrete weighs roughly ten times a cubic yard of household junk. The same volume can be light or far too heavy.

03

Road weight limits

Heavy debris can exceed legal axle limits, so haulers cap how full a container can be - not just how heavy.

04

Moisture

Wet soil, carpet, and drywall weigh significantly more than dry. Rain before pickup can push a load over its limit.

Methodology

How this calculator estimates weight

Weight equals your entered volume multiplied by an approximate density per cubic yard for the chosen material. Density figures reflect ranges published by dumpster-rental companies for debris estimating. The result is compared against the included tonnage typically bundled with 10, 20, 30, and 40-yard roll-off containers. These are planning estimates - actual weight varies with moisture, compaction, and material mix, so always confirm tonnage limits and overage rates with your hauler.
