Getting More Jobs

Home Service Lead Qualification Framework

Stop driving across town for bad leads. Ask a few simple questions first and focus on jobs that are worth your time.

March 28, 2026 · 7 min read · Joel Pearson

You drove 40 minutes to give a free estimate to someone who wanted a $75 job and haggled over that. You already knew 3 minutes into the call that it was not going to be worth your time. The problem is not your instincts. The problem is you did not ask the right questions before you drove out.

Here is how to stop wasting time on bad leads without being rude about it.

The Core Answer

You do not need a framework. You need 3 questions.

Before you drive out to give a free estimate, find out: What is the job? Where is it? What is their timeline and budget?

If they will not answer those 3 questions, they are a tire-kicker. You can ask over text. Something like: "Before I drive out, can you tell me a little more about the job and what you are looking to spend?" The ones who answer are serious. The ones who say "just come look" usually are not worth the drive.

When It Gets More Complicated

1. They say "I do not have a budget" or "I just want to know the cost." That is a budget conversation they are trying to avoid. You can still ask: "Just to give you a rough idea of whether we would be a good fit, is this a $500 job or a $5,000 job?" Even a ballpark from them tells you a lot.

2. They have a very small job and are upfront about it. That is fine. If the job fits within your minimum charge and you have the time, take it. A small job from a homeowner who is easy to work with is worth more than a large job from someone who is going to argue every line item.

3. The job is large but they are vague about budget. Go out. But be prepared to qualify them on the call. Walk through the scope and when you have a number, present it clearly and watch the reaction. That tells you whether they are serious.

How to Actually Do It

1. Write down your 3 qualification questions. Add them to your phone notes.

2. When a lead calls, get them to answer all 3 before you commit to a visit. You can do this conversationally in 2-3 minutes.

3. If they refuse to answer questions about budget or timeline, let them know your minimum charge upfront. That often resolves things immediately.

4. If you do go out, set a time limit for free estimates. 20-30 minutes. That keeps you from spending a half day on a job that is not going to close.

5. Track which questions are the best predictors for you. Over a few months, you will know the patterns. Some trades find that job type is the biggest signal. Others find that neighborhood or timeline tells them more.

How LightWork Connects to This

LightWork does this automatically. Customers fill out a form on your website and get a price range before they ever contact you. By the time they reach out, they have already seen your rate and decided they are okay with it. That is the core of lead qualification, done before the phone rings.

Home Service Lead Qualification Framework Implementation Notes

Home Service Lead Qualification Framework should have its own operating rule, not just a reused marketing paragraph. For this topic, the practical distinction is service: what the customer or crew needs to decide before the next step. Treat qualification as the handoff detail and framework as the proof point you review after the first week.

In a small contractor business, the useful version of this playbook is a one-page field standard: who owns the first response, what information must be collected, which price or schedule boundary gets stated, and when the lead moves to a quote, callback, invoice, review request, or no-fit status. That keeps the page tied to real work instead of sounding like another generic lead ops article.

For LightWork customers, the action item is to turn the topic into a trackable workflow inside the estimate and booking path. Add the specific question, route, tag, script, or price assumption that matches home service lead qualification; then review the next ten jobs to see whether response time, close rate, callback rate, or payment speed actually changed.

FAQ

How do I know if a lead is worth my time?

They tell you the job, the location, and give you a sense of their budget without a fight. A lead who dodges the budget question, refuses to describe the job in any detail, or wants you to drive out before giving any information is usually not worth your time. Trust that pattern.

What should I ask before giving a free estimate?

What is the job? Where is it located? What is your timeline? What is your rough budget? You can ask all four over text in 60 seconds. The answers tell you whether to drive out or whether to quote a minimum charge and let them decide.

How do I stop wasting time on low-budget customers?

Put your minimum charge and your price range somewhere customers can see it before they contact you. On your website, in your voicemail, on your Google Business Profile. Customers who cannot work with your rates will not call. Customers who call already know what you charge.
